What is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist?

A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is the food and nutrition expert professionally qualified to translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living.  RDNs separate nutrition fiction with facts vetted through science, educate how healthy eating improves and/or prevents chronic disease, and are able to develop personalized plans for individuals of all ages.  Specifically, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist has met the following academic and professional requirements:

  • Earned a bachelor’s degree with course work approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Completed an accredited, supervised practice program of at least 1200 hours at a health-care facility, community agency, or foodservice corporation.
  • Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Completes continuing professional education requirements to maintain registration.

The state of Ohio maintains that Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are the only professionals who can administer individualized plans for nutrition and therefore provide licensing for these individuals only.  Anyone can call him- or herself a “nutritionist” or “wellness coach”– regardless of education or training – so it is crucial to look for the respected “RDN” or “RD” credential when choosing any type of nutritional care.

With so many books and popular diets out there, why should I consider nutrition coaching?

“Do you want to lose or gain weight?  Are you pregnant, looking to become pregnant or just had a child?  Are you looking for ways to maintain your health in your older years?  Are you an athlete looking to boost performance? These are just a few of the reasons people seek the expert, science-based advice of a registered dietitian nutritionist.”  From the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, here are 10 common reasons you should consult with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.   The nutrition care process starts with an assessment and nutrition diagnosis, before creating an intervention plan.  Would you take blood pressure medication without having the doctor measure your blood pressure?  An antibiotic without knowing if you truly have an infection?  Probably not, so why do the same with a diet program?  Nutrition coaching from a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist provides you with a unique plan that works for your life - something many books, popular diets, and supplement programs fail to do.

What happens during my nutrition coaching appointments?

In your initial appointment, we’ll walk through your medical history, diet history, and current nutrition concerns.  We’ll talk about what motivates you to live a healthier life and solutions to any present or future barriers.  For one hour, we will meet in my office or talk via phone or Skype.  We’ll set actionable and personalized goals – based on your health status, motivations, and food preferences – so that you will feel confident and ready to achieve your nutrition ambitions.  We’ll discuss topics that are important to you, like how to read a food label, how to eat healthy when at a restaurant, and recipe ideas to prepare at home or on-the-go.

Following the initial consultation, your follow-up plans may includefollow-up appointments, food log reviews, and email support that will help keep you accountable, track your progress, and set new goals.  You’ll receive encouragement, healthy ideas, and answers to all your questions along the way.

I prefer the privacy of nutrition coaching in my home.  Can you still help me?

Absolutely!  You have the option to schedule in-person appointments at the YES! Nutrition home-office in Fort Loramie, Ohio on a date and time that work best for your schedule.  Alternatively, YES! I can't wait to get started with nutrition coaching!  How do I schedule my first appointment?

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, YES! Nutrition, LLC, does not accept payment through private insurance coverage, Medicare, or Medicaid.  We’re working on it though because we know it means a lot to you!  Until then, we are able to provide you with a Superbill upon request that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement for out-of-network benefits.  Please understand that a Superbill does not guarantee nutrition counseling reimbursement, so please check with your insurance provider prior to your appointment to determine if nutrition counseling is covered in your plan.  You may use this script to assist in your communications.   Please note that if you would like a Superbill in an attempt to receive reimbursement, you may not be eligible for certain package programs listed on this site.  Please contact Tori for pricing.

Though not always required, it is helpful to have a referral from your physician when submitting for insurance reimbursement.  Download this Referral Form to request a referral from your physician for your nutrition concern(s) and bring the completed form to your first nutrition appointment.
